2nd Asian Beach Games Muscat 2010

Oman welcomes the Asian Olympic family to its shore, with the greatest show the Sultanate has ever hosted at the 2nd Asian Beach Games Muscat 2010 Opening Ceremony. Five thousand dignitaries including IOC President Jacques Rogge joined Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah in the sporting extravaganza hosting 14 beach sports.

From 8-16 December 2010 the Sultanate of Oman will welcome thousands of athletes, officials, media, fans, and members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Family to Oman for the 2nd Asian Beach Games Muscat 2010. These Games will be the largest celebration of sporting excellence and cultural diversity to ever touch Oman's shores.

The Asian Beach Games is a multi-sport event sanctioned by the OCA and will be held every two years with the first edition hosted by Bali, Indonesia in 2008.

As the world's largest continent, Asia is home to some 4 billion people - or approximately 60 percent of the human population. Each of the 45 countries and regions under the Olympic Council of Asia boasts its own unique customs, traditions, religions and social values creating a continent of diversity.

The Games encourage Asia's youth to participate in sport and celebrate the vast and varied cultures found across the continent. It works to uplift national pride and creates a festival of cooperation and camaraderie.

Beach sports are known to be the most ecological of any sport and, fittingly, will be played in Oman, a country known for its efforts in conservation and protection of wildlife and nature.

Oman is one of the world's longest inhabited countries with civilisation starting as early as 5,000 years ago, and a maritime history dating back thousands of years. The Sultanate boasts over 3,000km of unspoilt coastline and a young population that loves sport. Beach sports are known as the most ecological of any sport, and fittingly, will be played in Oman a country known for its efforts in conservation and protection of wildlife and nature. These factors combine to make Oman the ideal host for the 2nd Asian Beach Games.

Upon being awarded the 2nd Asian Beach Games, Oman saw the opportunity to celebrate the differences found across Asia using sport as the common denominator. The Games encourage Asia's youth to participate in sport and celebrate the vast and varied cultures found across the continent. It works to uplift national pride and creates a festival of cooperation and camaraderie.
