The incident occurred on thursday, 04-02-2010, late afternoon. The 43 year old Austrian was injured after falling seven metres onto the catamaran’s hull. Crew Members Gabriele Olivo (ITA, Ocean Race Participant), David Vera (ESP, Americas Cup 2007 and Ocean Race Participant) and Hans Peter Steinacher (AUT/Double Olympic Champion Tornado Class) escaped without any injuries. The 40-foot catamaran was severely damaged as a result of the incident.

As well severe bruising, damage to his knee and fourteen stitches needed in a cut to his right hand, the experienced Austrian is also feared to have torn ligaments in his left ankle as a result of the accident. “When I see the pictures and think about the fraction of a second it took for the whole thing to happen, then I can count myself lucky that it wasn’t a lot worse,” commented Hagara in an initial statement given on Thursday evening (local time). The skipper will head back to Austria in the next few days to undergo a series of detailed medical examinations.

Spain´s David Vera, who successfully completed the 2009/10 Volvo Ocean Race, could barely contain his excitement after the final day’s racing: “I have sailed pretty much every racing boat on the planet, but I have never had so much fun. I have to say, though, that the sailing rarely has it been as hard as it was this week. I hope that Roman can resume training soon and that I will be a part of the action in the European Series.”

With a total of 14 wins and 21 podium finishes in Hong Kong, Singapore and Muscat, the double-Olympic champions used plenty of their chances to demonstrate their sailing pedigree in impressive fashion. The team comprising Hagara, Steinacher, Vera and Olivo ended up dropping from second to fifth place in the overall standings of the Extreme Sailing Series Asia.
