Encouraged by Reidar Thorolf Christainsen, his folklorist friend and hardened hibernophile, Ole Mørk Sandvik set out for Ireland in the summer of 1927. His three-month long journey aimed at identifying traces stemming from Viking times of Norse influence on Gaelic music and song, was financed by the Norwegian Research Council. In the event, Sandvik's attention focused upon the phenomenon of grace notes, a distinctive feature of Irish song whose beauty and complexity completely overwhelmed him. Sandvik made numerous sound recordings, noted down scores of songs and took many photographs. This illustrated talk describes his travels in various parts of Ireland and his experiences on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides.

Séamas Ó Catháin is a native of county Tyrone and a graduate of Queen's University Belfast. He lectured at the University of Uppsala and at University College Galway before succeeding Seán Ó Súilleabháin as archivist in the Department of Irish Folklore at University College Dublin, where he later served as Dean of the Faculty of Celtic Studies and, until his recent retirement, as Professor of Irish Folklore. His scholarly interests include folk narrative, calendar custom and folk belief and the history of folklore studies in Ireland. His many articles and books include Formation of a Folklorist, an account of the visit by Séamas Ó Duilearga (James Hamilton Delargy) to Scandinavia in 1928 which was published by the Folklore of Ireland Council in 2008.
