Orange British Academy Film Awards

Sunday 8th February 2009: The wait is over as the winners are announced at a star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House.


World-renowned actors, actresses and film-makers will be gracing the red carpet this year for what is the biggest event of the UK film calendar. Jonathan Ross will be the host at this year’s Awards, for the third time in a row.

The Awards look set to be dominated by current front-runners Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button which are leading the field with eleven nominations each, followed by The Dark Knight with nine nominations and Changeling with eight nominations.

Other films that are looking to sweep the board are Frost/Nixon with six nominations and The Reader with five nominations, one of which is for Best Film.

In the running for the coveted title of Best Film is Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon and Milk.

Frontrunner Kate Winslet, nominated twice for leading actress in The Reader and Revolutionary Road, will be competing against Angelina Jolie for Changeling, Kristin Scott Thomas for I’ve Loved You So Long and Meryl Streep for Doubt. And names in the frame for leading actor are: Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), Sean Penn (Milk), Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler).

This year’s award ceremony will also see the fourth year of the Orange Rising Star Award. The only Award voted for by the public; it is presented to a young actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition and who has captured the imagination of the British public as a film star in the making. This year’s nominees are Michael Cera (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), Noel Clarke (Adulthood), Michael Fassbender (Hunger), Rebecca Hall (Frost/Nixon)and Toby Kebbell (Rock N’Rolla).

Former winners of the Orange Rising Star Award are Shia LaBeouf (2008), Eva Green (2007) and James McAvoy (2006)
